  5. How Learning The Basics...

When you think of programming languages, what image comes to mind? If it’s a dark room filled with the sound of typing and baffling jargon, then you won’t be very happy about what’s coming next: you need to learn some code.

The simple fact of the matter is that, unless you have at least a vague grasp of what code is, how it works and how it’s actually made, you’re at risk of being, at best, seen as out of touch, and at worst, of being taken advantage of by unscrupulous parties.

Where Do I Even Start?

Don’t panic. Coding isn’t as hard as it seems – or as you may have been led to believe.

Essentially, code is just another language; a language which a computer can understand. It has grammar, syntax, and even its own words. Just over a third of all programming languages are based on English, so you won’t have to throw everything you know out of the window just yet.

Your best bet is to start small – learn some HTML, maybe a little Javascript, and progress from there. Trying to jump in at the deep end with Assembly will put you right off.

Why Do I Need To Know?

One of the best reasons to learn to code is because it is genuinely interesting. Gradually coming to understand why things like the internet, websites and software work the way that they do is a deeply rewarding process. Perhaps a more pressing reason to learn, however, is because if you don’t, you’re in danger of being ripped off.

If you’ve ever interacted with programmers in any way, say to have a website built, you may have come away feeling like you didn’t really understand what you’d signed up for. For unscrupulous characters, this makes you an easy target, because it’s hard to confidently question their proposed prices and deadlines when you don’t really understand what it is they do.

Don’t Try To Do It All
