  5. Windows 10: The Latest...

Well, Windows 10 is certainly shaping up to be a far bigger and better beast than the controversial Windows 8 ever was. Its predecessor was predominantly built for tablets and touch-screens in mind – and left many desktop and laptop PC users infuriated with the unintuitive operating system.

Windows 10 is looking to shake all of that up. Currently available as a technical preview, the OS will get a worldwide release at some point this year, although the Redmond-based company are being coy with exact details. There’s also no details on price yet, although Andreas Diantoro, president of Microsoft Indonesia, confirmed that the new system will be free to users of Windows 8, with those currently using Windows 7 paying only a small fee to upgrade. In fact, the word on the tech street is that Windows 10 may actually be entirely free – although those companies looking to licence the OS to put on hardware will probably still have to pay.

The whole Windows 10 set-up is designed to erase the apparent duality – and disparity – between different Windows devices. ‘One product family, one platform, one store’ is how Microsoft themselves describe it. What you have on your Windows Phone, you’ll have on the computer, especially when it comes to resizable apps and software like Xbox Smartglass and the voice-activated personal assistant, Cortana. And, of course as we’ve already discussed, the classic start menu will be back – and vastly enhanced.

Not all the cats are out of the bag yet though. Just a lot of hints, leaks and presumptions. One of the most interesting things appears to be that Microsoft are working on an all-new, all-shiny web browser, code-named Spartan, which seeks to offer users a whole new way of web-surfing. According to leaks, the user interface is far sleeker and minimalist than the old Internet Explorer, and if the OS is anything to go by, will be pretty lightweight to run. It will also be able to run several browsers within one – allowing the screen to split into four separate windows, all visible at once.

Could this be the best version of Windows ever? We’re excited to find out, and will bring you more information as it’s released.
