  5. Tip of the Month:...

You may think searching the web for an answer is an easy task... that is until you come face to face with a screen full of unhelpful or irrelevant search results.

Surely you don’t need a masters degree in Google searching to effectively find the search results you want? Luckily for you, here at Tristar, we are experts in the art of effective Google searching, and as a provider of the best IT Services in London, we’re going to share with you some of our tips for finding those illusive relevant search results!

Following on from our first post in our new “Tip of the Month” blog series, this post is going to help you get those relevant answers in minutes.

Use Quotations to Search for Exact Phrases.

Say you are searching for IT Services in London on Google. Simply putting quotation marks around the phrase you are looking for will bring up all search results with web pages that contain that exact phrase.

This filters out any search results that may contain all of those words in a similar order, but which may be irrelevant to what you are specifically searching for.

Search Particular Websites

Believe it or not, you can make Google filter out all other websites and just focus on one website.

Let’s say you are trying to find our page on Network Support and Monitoring and you aren’t sure how to find it on our website. To perform a Google search of our site, you would simply type “Network Support and Monitoring” site:http:// http://tristaritsupport.co.uk and Google will trawl through our website and find what you are looking for.

Use Numeric Ranges

If you are looking at a search with numbers, such as dates , you can search Google and pull up results that are within a range of numbers. To do this, you add two ellipses in between the dates or numbers you are wanting to range search.

So if you are looking at searching for the hottest weather in the past ten years, you can type “Hottest weather in the UK 2005..2015” and you should have a screen full of search results that contain information about the hottest weather in the UK between 2005 and 2015.

Google isn’t only useful for searching. It’s got useful features such as the define function and inbuilt calculator.

Define

The define function allows you to type a word into the search box and bring up a definition of it, as well as a whole host of web pages that are dedicated to defining the word you have typed in. These can be various dictionary sites, but Google will define the word at the top of the page

Calculator

The calculator function allows you to do simple calculations through the Google search box. Using the symbols +, -, * and / you can perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on the search engine and Google will produce the answer for you.
