There’s no denying that the advancement of today’s technology is getting faster and more frequent with every update.

With more and more focus being placed on the concept of virtual reality (VR) and the ability to interact more with our computers, it’s little wonder that technology and computer giants Microsoft have jumped on the VR trend and come up with a headset which aims to create the most immersive computer interaction ever seen.

It’s called the HoloLens and although it was formally announced way back in January, and further announcements were made about the unique piece of kit at E3 this year, its “early 2016” release is closing in on us!

Going Beyond the Screen

The main aim of the HoloLens is to create a fully interactive platform for you to communicate and work with your computer. This is done using three interface design components- gesture, gaze and voice.

The gaze element allows you do navigate the screen that you will see before your eyes when you slip the device on your head. Turning your head moved the HoloLens’ “cursor” rather than simply moving your eyes. This allows you to navigate the screen effectively and focus your attention on objects or elements that you see.

Gestures are pretty self explanatory, and the HoloLens is expected to  support a whole range of physical gestures which will allow you to interact with the objects you see “on screen”. One example is the “click” gesture.

The user will hold their hand up into their field of vision and perform a click motion, just like if you were clicking a physical mouse. This will select or activate UI elements or objects for a unique interactive experience.

Again, the voice component should be pretty obvious. The HoloLens will be able to understand and react to a variety of voice commands, depending on the programme or application that is being used.

Improved Communication

Microsoft predicts that the HoloLens will not only improve the communication between human and computer, but human to human as well.

With applications such as Skype, the HoloLens will be able to connect and immerse the user in a whole new world. Using the device, the person on the other end of the video call will be able to see your environment as you see it, allowing them to help you with tasks that you might be struggling with- something that we are incredibly excited about as IT support  specialists!

A More Natural and Ergonomic Way to Interact
